Job trike: The trike from your employer
Like any "normal" bike or pedelec, recumbent bikes that fall into this category can also be purchased as a "company bike" on favourable terms by leasing through the employer. "Your company leases the JobRad for you. You ride it whenever you want: To work, in everyday life, on holiday or for sport. The monthly instalments are automatically deducted from your salary. Thanks to additional tax incentives (0.5 % rule), you save up to 40 % compared to a traditional purchase. If your employer provides you with the bike free of charge in addition to your salary, you can even ride it completely tax-free." (Source: Jobrad)
The company bike, just like a company car, can also be ridden in your free time. But even more exciting is the fact that a company bike is more attractive for employees than a salary increase, because the company bike amounts to a tax-free payment. A distinction is made between a company bike as a salary conversion and a company bike as a salary extra. With the former, the employee pays the leasing instalments from their own gross monthly salary. With the latter, the employer pays the instalments as an extra benefit. Since 1 January 2019, the obligation to pay tax on the monetary benefit no longer applies. The employee therefore rides the bike tax-free.
At the end of the leasing period, which is usually three years, the employee can take over the recumbent bike at a "residual value" of 40%. However, as the company "JobRad calculates a used purchase price of 17% of the actual purchase price, the difference represents a non-cash benefit. However, the JobRad cyclist does not have to pay tax on this, as JobRad bears the tax burden as part of the flat-rate taxation option in accordance with Section 37b of the Income Tax Act. This solution applies nationwide and has been confirmed by the Federal Ministry of Finance." (Source: Jobrad)
However, it is important to note that no purchase option is stipulated in the contract, otherwise the tax office could find out during a tax audit and subsequently collect taxes with interest! It is also unacceptable for the employer to act as the buyer but leave maintenance and insurance to the employee. The employer should therefore take out wear and tear insurance with full cover for the trike at the time of purchase. All maintenance work, damage and theft are covered by the insurance.
With all the tax benefits on offer, leasing via the employer is an unbeatably favourable way to acquire a trike. Other providers besides jobrad.org are businessbike.de, eurorad.de, company-bike-solutions.com, mein-dienstrad.de or lease-a-bike.de.
